Our Company

In 1994, Nancy Smithers founded Naturally Nova Scotia Health Products Limited. The company's roots were planted single-handedly by Nancy. She gathered herbs nearby her Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia home, and began manufacturing the herbs into health remedies in her kitchen and basement.

The business has since grown to include a 250-acre certified organic farm on Nova Scotia’s beautiful Eastern Shore, as well as a state-of-the-art freeze-drying and manufacturing facility.

To better understand how herbs and natural remedies could benefit her customers, Nancy enrolled in the Wild Rose College of Natural Healing, based in Calgary, Canada. Early in her apprenticeship, Nancy recognized that quality would be an issue and commenced a series of steps to ensure Naturally Nova Scotia lived up to its mission..."to provide a high quality product for the benefit of the consumer..." Such measures include:

  • Ensuring all manufacturing processes meet Health Canada's Site License requirements for compliance to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards.
  • Achieving and maintaining certified organic status for farming and processing.
  • Being the first North American herbal company to become ISO registered.
  • Establishing an on-site freeze-drying facility for processing herbs as an alternative to the more common method of air-drying which uses heat, a process known to cause cellular oxidation and thus destroy important medicinal constituents.
  • Being the first North American herbal manufacturing company to achieve organic certification under the new Japanese Agriculture Standards (JAS).

Naturally Nova Scotia is a true herbal company in every respect. It follows a policy of vertical integration, including growing and harvesting plants, new product formulation, manufacturing and packaging, and finished product distribution. To achieve its position as a leading producer and innovator in the herbal industry, Naturally Nova Scotia has invested heavily in research in conjunction with The National Research Council of Canada, P.E.I. Food Technology Centre, Agriculture Canada, Acadia University, University of British Columbia, and others.
